English Magician
26 August 2011

Is it true some English Magicians calmed the English Channel so D-Day could take place?
That is the claim, and they say the weather reports back it up in that the Channel had a storm raging for days before D-Day!

Cirque du Soleil – Varekai $12.94 Even by the high standards of Cirque du Soleil, Varekai is outstanding. While this artsy circus often aspires to weave a narrative through its spectacular events, in Varekai that story (about a winged boy who falls to earth and falls in love with a caterpillar girl) is as delightful and engaging as the acrobatic feats–which is saying a lot, because these feats will leave you agog. Acrobats j… |

The Magician (The Criterion Collection) [Blu-ray] $24.70 Ingmar Bergman spent a glorious film career exploring themes of death and redemption (The Seventh Seal, Wild Strawberries), and his lesser-known gem The Magician fits perfectly into this genre. The Magician, shot eerily in crisp black and white, is one of Bergman’s most unsettling films, and one that stays with the viewer long afterward. Several of Bergman’s regular actors are featured, and all, a… |

Lili [VHS] $14.98 The wonderful Leslie Caron stars in this Oscar-winning musical fable with a touch of the bizarre. It is. Caron’s performance is lovely. She is, as always, a graceful dancer, but she is also able to pu… |

The Omnipotent Magician $9.99 Lancelot Brown changed the face of eighteenth-century England, designing country estates and mansions, moving hills and making flowing lakes and serpentine rivers, a magical world of green. This English landscape style spread across Europe and the world. At home, it proved so pleasing that Brown’s influence spread into the lowland landscape at large, and into landscape painting. He stands behind our vision, and fantasy, of rural England. In this vivid, lively biography, based on detailed research, Jane Brown paints an unforgettable picture of the man, his work, his happy domestic life, and his crowded world. She follows the life of the jovial yet elusive Mr Brown, from his childhood and apprenticeship in rural Northumberland, through his formative years at Stowe, the most famous garden of the day. His innovative ideas, and his affable and generous nature, led to a meteoric rise to a Royal Appointment in 1764 and his clients and friends ranged from statesmen like the elder Pitt to artists and actors like David Garrick. Riding constantly across England, Brown never ceased working until he collapsed and died in February 1783 after visiting one of his oldest clients. He was a practical man but also a visionary, always willing to try something new. As this delightful, and beautifully illustrated biography shows, Brown filled England with enchantment ? follies, cascades, lakes, bridges, ornaments, monuments, meadows and woods ? creating views that still delight us today. |

The Magician (Dodo Press) $18.48 William Somerset Maugham (1874-1965) was an English playwright, novelist, and short story writer. He was one of the most popular authors of his era, and reputedly the highest paid of his profession during the 1930s. By 1914 he was famous, with 10 plays produced and 10 published novels. His masterpiece is generally agreed to be Of Human Bondage (1915), a semi-autobiographical novel that deals with the life of the main character Philip Carey, who like Maugham, was orphaned, and brought up by his pious uncle. His last major novel, The Razor’s Edge, published in 1944, was a departure for him in many ways. While much of the novel takes place in Europe, its main characters are American, not British. His other works include: Liza of Lambeth (1897), Mrs Craddock (1902), A Man of Honour (1903), The Land of the Blessed Virgin (1905), The Bishop’s Apron (1906), Lady Frederick (1907), The Magician (1908), Home and Beauty (1909), The Moon and Sixpence (1919), The Circle (1921), The Trembling of a Leaf (1921), and On a Chinese Screen (1922). |

Excerpt from book: ESSAY Merlin tlie magician. Among the records of the Middle Ages, that is to say from the middle of the 12l,h to the ‘same period of the 13′,h Centuries ? are to be found many valuable and interesting Poetical Legends, the whole of which, whether productions of the North or South of Europe animated by the adventurous character of the period, breathe alike the true spirit of chivalrous and romantic enterprise and seem to possess too many properties of affinity to leave a doubt as to their having had either one common origin, or been propagated from one Country to the other. It is certain that fabulous tales and fictitious narratives, embodying more or less of the marvellous in their construction and agencies, were already known to the Greeks l) at a very early period and subsequently adopted from them by the Romans; but is far more difficult to state with an equal degree of certainty, where modern Romance took its rise and from whence it spread its power over all the different nations of the Middle Ages. The subject is interesting and curious and has not escaped the attention of the learned, but being involved in much darkness the origin of Romantical Poetry has been attributed with some shew of authority to ‘) See Ritson Ancient english metrical Romances I. 5. three sources altogether different from each other. To the Scandinavians ‘), the Arabians 2), the Provencals 3) has the merit been successively accorded, but Kits on in his ‘Ancient English Metrical Romances’, and Dunlop in his ‘History of Fiction’ have successfully ridiculed the three several systems andproved that considerable misapprehension had arisen from their supporters having blended elements which are totally unconnected. Thus the arbitrary fiction of Romance (viz: the employment of supernatural agencies… |

He finds it in a lovely sculptor he hypnotizes and spirits off to an ancient sorcerer’s tower, preparing to rip her heart from her living body. Magic Power Language Symbol: A Magician’s Exploration of Linguistics $16.48 From the sigils of chaos magic to the numerical code of Qabalah, all magical practices operate in a web of symbols and language. Yet academics seldom examine the role that semiotics and linguistics play in the unfolding of magical works. In the follow-up to his debut Postmodern Magic, Patrick Dunn returns once again to the theoretical realm of the sign, the signified, and the changeable perceptions of a slippery reality. Intellectual and aggressively modern, his language-driven perspective on magic touches on all elements voiced and written, from speaking in tongues and creating mantras to composing Enochian spells and working with gematria. A hefty appendix includes exercises that put Dunn’s theories to work, as well as the first published dictionary of English alphabet numerology. Highly literate and highly readable, Magic, Power, Language, Symbol will tickle the minds of theory-thirsty academics and seasoned mages alike, as well as anyone else eager to examine the manufacture of meaning. |

A Critical, Old-Spelling Edition of the Birth of Merlin (Q 1662) $67 Credited on its first title page to William Shakespeare and William Rowley, The Birth of Merlin continues to provoke speculation about its place in the Shakespeare ”Apocrypha”. The play is an imaginative re-working of the story of Merlin the Magician and his part in the struggle against the Saxon invasion of Britain. It contains not only scenes of love, war, and court politics, but a devil, a clown, and an unusual number of spectacular stage effects. This edition seeks to provide contexts for the play”s diverse elements (chronicle history, romance, spectacle, and comedy), and considers its relationships with a wide variety of texts from Geoffrey of Monmouth and the English prose Brut to Shakespeare”s Henry VIII. |

A Wanderer in the Perfect City $17 There is something both marvelous and hilarious, writes Lawrence Weschler, in watching the humdrum suddenly take flight. This is, in part, a collection of such launchings. Indeed, the eight essays collected in A Wanderer in the Perfect City do soar into the realm of passion as Weschler profiles people who were just moseying down the street one day, minding their own business, when suddenly and almost spontaneously, they caught fire, they became obsessed, they became intensely focused and intensely alive. With keen observations and graceful prose, Weschler carries us along as a teacher of rudimentary English from India decides that his destiny is to promote the paintings of an obscure American abstract expressionist; a gifted poker player invents a more exciting version of chess; an avant-garde Russian emigre conductor speaks Latin, exclusively, to his infant daughter; and Art Spiegelman composes Maus. But simple summaries can’t do these stories justice: like music, they derive their character from digressions and details, cadence and tone. And like the upwelling of passion Weschler’s characters feel, they are better experienced than explained. Weschler seems so hungry for life that the rest of us become hungry for him . . . a magician, a performer, and a scholar. All in one. –from the Foreword by Pico Iyer Weschler’s essays are exquisitely written–so perfectly and unobtrusively organized that one can’t imagine telling them a better way. — New York Times Book Review Weschler is the owner of a large dose of novelistic vision, and a particularly poetic set of ears, but . . . as important an endowment as a novelist’s eye or a poet’s ear is still thejournalistic nose which led him down the proverbial alley. — National Post (Canada) Weschler is a thoughtful observer and a superb storyteller. — Minneapolis Star Tribune |

Baldus $29.95 Teofilo Folengo (1491- 1544) was born in Mantua and joined the Benedictine order, but became a runaway monk and a satirist of monasticism. In 1517 he published, under the pseudonym Merlin Cocaio, the first version of his macaronic narrative poem Baldo, later enlarged and elaborated. It blended Latin with various Italian dialects in hexameter verse, inventing a deliberately droll language whose humor depends on the mixture of high and low tonalities. An important example of the mock-heroic epic, the work was a model for Rabelais and was frequently reprinted. Baldo, the hero of these picaresque adventures, is a descendant of French royalty who starts out as something of a juvenile delinquent. The poem narrates episodes which include imprisonment; battles with local authorities, pirates, shepherds, witches, and demons; and a journey to the underworld. Throughout Baldo is accompanied by various companions, among them a giant, a centaur, a magician, and his best friend Cingar, a wickedly inventive trickster ( practicus ad beffas ). This edition provides the first English translation of this hilarious send-up of ancient epic and Renaissance chivalric romance. |

Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell $15.95 From the Publisher: Centuries ago, when magic still existed in England, the greatest magician of them all was the Raven King. A human child brought up by fairies, the Raven King blended fairy wisdom and human reason to create English magic. Now, at the beginning of the nineteenth century, he is barely more than a legend, and England, with its mad King and its dashing poets, no longer believes in practical magic. Then the reclusive Mr Norrell of Hurtfew Abbey appears and causes the statues of York Cathedral to speak and move. News spreads of the return of magic to England and, persuaded that he must help the government in the war against Napoleon, Mr Norrell goes to London. There he meets a brilliant young magician and takes him as a pupil. Jonathan Strange is charming, rich and arrogant. Together, they dazzle the country with their feats. But the partnership soon turns to rivalry. Mr Norrell has never conquered his lifelong habits of secrecy, while Strange will always be attracted to the wildest, most perilous magic. He becomes fascinated by the shadowy figure of the Raven King, and his heedless pursuit of long-forgotten magic threatens, not only his partnership with Norrell, but everything that he holds dear. |

Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell $14.99 The national bestseller is now available on audio!English magicians were once the wonder of the known world, with fairy servants at their beck and call; they could command winds, mountains, and woods. But by the early 1800s they have long since lost the ability to perform magic. They can only write long, dull papers about it, while fairy servants are nothing but a fading memory. But at Hurtfew Abbey in Yorkshire, the rich, reclusive Mr Norrell has assembled a wonderful library of lost and forgotten books from England’s magical past and regained some of the powers of England’s magicians. He goes to London and raises a beautiful young woman from the dead. Soon he is lending his help to the government in the war against Napoleon Bonaparte, creating ghostly fleets of rain-ships to confuse and alarm the French. All goes well until a rival magician appears. Jonathan Strange is handsome, charming, and talkative-the very opposite of Mr Norrell. Strange thinks nothing of enduring the rigors of campaigning with Wellington’s army and doing magic on battlefields. Astonished to find another practicing magician, Mr Norrell accepts Strange as a pupil. But it soon becomes clear that their ideas of what English magic ought to be are very different. For Mr Norrell, their power is something to be cautiously controlled, while Jonathan Strange will always be attracted to the wildest, most perilous forms of magic. He becomes fascinated by the ancient, shadowy figure of the Raven King, a child taken by fairies who became king of both England and Faerie, and the most legendary magician of all. Eventually Strange’s heedless pursuit of long-forgotten magic threatens to destroy not only his partnershipwith Norrell, but everything that he holds dear. Sophisticated, witty, and ingeniously convincing, Susanna Clarke’s magisterial novel weaves magic into a flawlessly detailed vision of historical England. She has created a world so thoroughly enchanting that eight hundred pages leave reade |

Millions to Measure $17.99 Marvelosissimo the Mathematical Magician, who made How Much Is a Million? and If You Made a Million so kid-friendly, now takes readers way back in time to see how systems of measuring developed. A foot was once measured with an actual foot — and as kids know, feet come in different sizes! Steven Kellogg’s artwork brings out all the fun and wild confusion created as humankind struggles to agree on a way to measure. Covering measurements of length, volume, and weight in the English and the metric systems, Marvelosissimo cleverly shows hippos, wrestlers, and his magical unicorn being measured in both. Outlaw’s Retreat: Selected Poems of Tom Merrill $21.95 As the editor of TheHyperTexts, it has been my pleasure and good fortune to publish three Pulitzer Prize nominees alongside recent winners of a number of prestigious literary awards. I like to think I know whereof I speak, and in my opinion T. Merrill is an outstanding poet whose poetry is highly original while always respecting and honoring the great and grand traditions of English poetry. I and others have noted that Merrill’s poetry calls to mind Housman, and I think the comparison is favorable to Housman as well as to Merrill. Moreover, Merrill writes rhythmic, enchanting, almost mystical poems that are sympathetic to the human condition without being weepily sentimental. That’s no small trick, and few poets of any era have pulled it off successfully. Merrill is a true magician of words, not a mere sleight-of-hand artist, and readers would be wise to fall under his spell. Michael R. Burch – Sponsor, Editor of www.thehypertexts.com |

Single & Single $16 John le Carre”s classic novels deftly navigate readers through the intricate shadow worlds of international intrigue with unsurpassed skill and knowledge, and have earned him unprecedented worldwide acclaim.A lawyer from a London finance house is shot dead on a Turkish hillside by people with whom he thought he was in business. A children”s magician in the English countryside is asked to explain the arrival of more than five million pounds sterling in his young daughter”s modest trust. In Single & Single, le Carre masterfully establishes a sequence of events whose connections are mysterious, complex and compelling. He tells of corrupt liaisons between criminal elements in the new Russian states and the world of legitimate finance in the West. He also paints an intimate portrait of two families: one Russian, the other English; one trading illicit goods, the other laundering the profits; one betrayed by a son-in-law, the other betrayed, and redeemed, by a son. |

So Late, So Soon: A Memoir $15.95 I found D’Arcy Fallon’s story facinating, as will anyone who has ever wondered about the role women play in fundamental religious sects. What would draw an other-wise independent woman to a life of menial labor and subservience? Fallon’s answer is this story, both an inside look at ’70s commune life and a funny, irreverent, poignant coming of age. -Judy Blunt, author of Breaking Clean D’Arcy Fallon offers an irreverent, fly-on-the-wall view of the Lighthouse Ranch, a Christian commune she called home for three years in the early 1970s. More than just a memoir about living an isolated religious existence on California’s slippery shoulder overlooking the Pacific, this book is about being 18 and alone and hitchhiking around the country and about getting taken in by Jesus people who loved the Lord and also made their own donuts. She writes of a series of harrowing and heartbreaking decisions that lead her away from the ranch and into her own life one step at a time. From So Late, So Soon I lay in bed listening to the waves crashing on the beach, and the splat-splat-splat of rain spattering on the sidewalk outside. Clouds over the ocean. Wind in the twisted cypress. If I closed my eyes, I could hear mold growing. The ground was a humid sponge that never dried out but kept decomposing underfoot. The windowpanes by my bed sprouted hairline fractures of dark green. It was so moist, the linoleum sagged like mushy Rice Crispies. Even clean cotton sheets fresh from the dryer quickly assumed the sweet-sour fragrance of curdled milk. Nature was a magician; it caused wood to bend and glass to sweat. D’Arcy Fallon has been an award-winning journalist and columnist for nearly 20 years. She teaches English composition and creative nonfiction at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs. |
